The Season Your Skin Has Been Waiting For

The Season Your Skin Has Been Waiting For

Jess Buckley
There is a particular kind of magic to fall. Summer doesn’t leave all at once. It lingers in the warm afternoons and the last stubborn green leaves, while the evenings begin arriving earlier. Windows that stayed open late are suddenly being pulled closed. Blankets return to the ends of beds. The air smells different. And somewhere between the last hot night of summer and the first morning you can see your breath, your skin notices the change too. It always does. After twenty years as an aesthetician, I’ve learned that skin is far more seasonal than most people realize. It responds to our environment constantly—to heat, humidity, UV exposure, air conditioning, wind, indoor heating, stress, sleep and the products we put on it. Fall is one of those transitional seasons when I see skin begin asking for something different. And sometimes, it asks rather loudly. Summer Leaves More Behind Than Freckles We tend to think of summer skin as healthy skin. We’re glowing. We’re outside. There’s colour in our cheeks. Maybe a few more freckles across our noses. But underneath that summer glow, there can be a little chaos brewing. Months of increased UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation and uneven tone. Heat and sweat can mean congestion. Sunscreen, makeup and long humid days can leave pores feeling less than pristine. Then September arrives, humidity begins to drop, and suddenly skin that felt perfectly comfortable a few weeks ago feels tight, dull or strangely temperamental. This is why I consider fall one of the most important times of year to reassess your skincare. Not necessarily to buy an entirely new shelf of products. Your skin does not need a panic purchase. It needs you to pay attention. As temperatures cool and indoor heating begins, many people need to shift their focus toward hydration and barrier support. Depending on the skin, this can also be an excellent season to begin addressing some of what summer left behind: congestion, texture, pigmentation and accumulated surface damage. The goal isn’t to wage war on your face. It is to help your skin transition. The Three Facials I Love Most for Fall There is no single facial that every person should have. Skin doesn’t work that way, which is exactly why I believe in treating the person in front of me rather than following a predetermined recipe. But there are three treatments I find myself reaching for again and again as summer disappears. 1. Hydrodermabrasion: The Great Reset If summer has left your skin feeling congested, dehydrated, dull or simply a little neglected, this is where I love to begin. Hydrodermabrasion combines exfoliation, cleansing, extraction and hydration in a treatment that allows us to clear away accumulated debris while replenishing the skin. It is one of my favourite examples of why “dry” and “congested” are not opposites. Skin can desperately need hydration while simultaneously holding onto oil, dead skin and buildup. Fall hydrodermabrasion feels a little like opening every window in the house before winter arrives. Clear out what no longer belongs. Then replenish what does. 2. Dermaplaning: Goodbye, Summer Skin There is something incredibly satisfying about dermaplaning in the fall. Using a sterile surgical blade, we carefully remove accumulated surface skin cells along with fine vellus hair—the soft “peach fuzz” on the face. The immediate result is that impossibly smooth feeling everyone wants to keep touching. But what I particularly love at this time of year is the fresh canvas it creates. Removing that superficial buildup can leave the complexion looking brighter and smoother, while allowing your carefully chosen skincare to meet the skin without quite so much sitting between the two. After months of sunscreen, sweat, heat and outdoor living, sometimes simple is beautiful. Remove. Replenish. Begin again. 3. IPL Skin Rejuvenation: When Summer Leaves Its Signature Fall also marks the return of one of my favourite treatment seasons. IPL skin rejuvenation uses targeted light energy to address concerns such as visible sun damage, uneven pigmentation, redness and certain superficial vascular concerns. And there is a reason we begin talking about these treatments once summer starts packing its bags. IPL and fresh sun exposure are not friends. Treatments require thoughtful timing, appropriate skin assessment and diligent sun protection, making the cooler, less sun-soaked months a much more practical season for many clients. Those little brown spots that seemed to become more noticeable over the summer? That unevenness you swear wasn’t there in May? Fall is when we can finally start having that conversation. Not because every freckle needs to disappear. Not because skin is supposed to be perfectly uniform. But because if something bothers you, there are intelligent ways to approach it. Your Bathroom Shelf Should Change With the Weather Too Professional treatments are only part of the equation. What happens during the other 364 days matters enormously. As fall settles in, take inventory of how your skin actually feels—not how it felt in July. If your cleanser suddenly leaves you tight, listen. If the lightweight moisturizer you adored all summer no longer gets you comfortably through the day, listen. If you’ve spent the summer avoiding stronger exfoliating products or retinoids because of increased sun exposure, fall may be the time to discuss bringing them thoughtfully back into your routine. Hydration often needs to increase. Barrier support becomes increasingly important. Exfoliation should remain intentional rather than aggressive. And sunscreen? That does not get packed away with the patio furniture. UV exposure does not cease to exist because you ordered a pumpkin spice latte. And Then There Is the Road Here Perhaps my favourite part of treating skin in the fall has absolutely nothing to do with skin. It is the drive. There is a stretch of road leading toward Pampered Aesthetics that feels almost fictional once autumn begins working its way through Warkworth. The trees gather overhead, slowly trading summer green for rust, crimson, amber and gold. Leaves collect along the roadside. The light filters differently through the branches. For a few brief weeks, the road to your facial looks less like Ontario and more like something borrowed from the pages of a fairy tale. And tucked at the end of it is our little private spa. No bustling waiting room. No conveyor belt of appointments. Just a quiet place to come in from the cold, settle beneath the blankets and let someone else take care of you for a while. Maybe that is what I love most about fall. Nature becomes very good at reminding us that change does not always have to be fought. The trees don’t apologize for letting go. The light softens. The pace shifts. And perhaps our skin deserves the same grace. Summer asked it to withstand the sun, heat, humidity, sunscreen, sweat and long days. Fall can be the season we give something back. Take the winding road. Watch the trees change. Come inside. We’ll take it from there.
