Purchasing Chickens Gone Wrong, What did I do this time?

Ayam Cemina. Really there was no good opening line to this blog post, that’s on chickens. In particular the breed Ayam Cemina’s. For those that haven’t heard of them they are a breed of chicken native to Indonesia. It is known for its unique and striking appearance, as it is almost entirely black, including its feathers, beak, comb, and even internal organs. The Ayam Cemani is highly valued for its rarity . The Ayam Cemani is not only prized for its distinctive appearance but also for its cultural and symbolic significance. In Indonesian folklore, the bird is associated with mystical and spiritual beliefs, often regarded as having supernatural powers or as a good luck charm. It is also believed to have healing properties and is used in traditional rituals. Beyond its cultural significance, the Ayam Cemani is popular among poultry enthusiasts and breeders for its unique genetic traits. It is a medium-sized breed with a muscular build, and its skin, muscles, bones, and internal organs are all black due to a condition called fibromelanosis, which causes hyperpigmentation. This breed is known for being hardy and adaptable to various climates. Needless to say, when we decided to get chickens this was the breed that I wanted, we can use all the luck around here. With that being said, I started on my pursuit and learned there was a lot of scammers out there in the chicken world. I found one reputable breeder in Ontario, 2.5 hours away. Much to tanners delight we embarked on this journey to get some baby chicks; the trip ended up being 4 hours each way. He was extra impressed about this but hey, we were getting the chicks we wanted. Well, much is the story of my life, I am doing a million tasks at once. We arrived to learn they did not have any chicks of that particular breed there were 4/ 5 others we could choose from. I didn’t want to settle. So, we ended up with eggs that we needed to hatch ourselves. I can honestly tell you we have 0 experience in this. To add to this fun filled adventure we brought the electric car, so we didn’t have enough juice or time to make side stops as we had to be home to get the goblins off the bus. I was Tanners absolute favourite person at this point. Home we came to get the goblins and switch vehicles and onwards we went to the farm supply to purchase an incubator. 18 days they go in with no water, then water is added the last three to help them hatch. Basically, we hope for the best that at least some would hatch as we have 0 experience, and it could potentially turn into a very expensive experiment. Why am I writing this ridiculous blog post? We are all human we all make mistakes sometimes; it’s how we pivot and adjust that matters. Nothing always goes our way. Sometimes, more often than not our life is chaos. We show up for it every day, and eventually they make funny stories and you can laugh about it. Did the chicks hatch, did they not? Stay tuned!
