Oil Isn’t the Enemy

Oil Isn’t the Enemy: Why Facial Oils Deserve a Spot in Your Routine Let’s clear something up—literally and figuratively. For years, facial oils have been unfairly villainized in the world of skincare, especially by those of us who grew up associating the word “oil” with clogged pores, breakouts, and an urgent need for blotting papers. But science, advanced formulations, and a deeper understanding of skin health have taught us something that needs to be said louder for the people in the back: not all oils are bad. In fact, the right facial oils can be one of the most transformative additions to your skincare routine. Our skin naturally produces oil—known as sebum—for a reason. It forms part of the skin's barrier, keeping moisture in and environmental aggressors out. However, when we strip our skin of these natural oils (think over-washing, harsh toners, or skipping moisturizers), we can inadvertently cause our skin to overproduce oil to compensate. This can lead to that frustrating cycle of shine, dehydration, and breakouts that so many of us have battled. Facial oils work differently. High-quality, non-comedogenic oils are designed to nourish, protect, and support the skin’s natural functions. They lock in hydration, soften texture, calm inflammation, and even help balance oil production over time. Think of them as a sealant—used as the final step in your nighttime routine or mixed into your moisturizer to boost nourishment, especially during the colder months when skin tends to be drier and more reactive. But not all oils are created equal. At Pampered Aesthetics, we carefully select oils based on their molecular size, absorption rate, and skin compatibility. Lightweight options like squalane, jojoba, or marula closely mimic the skin’s own sebum and are excellent for nearly all skin types—including oily or acne-prone skin. Heavier oils like rosehip or tamanu, rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, are better suited for dry, mature, or compromised skin in need of repair. What we love most about incorporating oils into our practice is their versatility and results. We’ve seen clients with persistent dry patches, flaking, and redness find relief with the right oil-based regimen. We've also helped those with congested, unbalanced skin retrain their barrier to function properly again—just by adjusting their relationship with oil. So, if you’ve been hesitant to try a facial oil because of outdated skincare advice, consider this your invitation to reconsider. The right oil can do more than just moisturize—it can restore, protect, and elevate your entire skincare experience. Your skin doesn't need to be scared of oil. It needs to be understood. And when chosen wisely, facial oils might just become your skin’s new best friend.
