Fostering a Dog With Spina Bifida

Apparently after tragedy strikes you shouldn’t be making major life decisions for a year as your ability to think logically has been altered. The ironic thing is I am methodical with over thinking the pros and the cons, thinking, analyzing every single possible outcome because that’s what people with high functioning anxiety do. Except… when I don’t, sometimes in my life my decision making is completely impulsive. Its rare, but it’s kind of big things when this happens.
It’s no secret that I have been gravely missing our English bulldogs lately. Who am I kidding, every single day! To those of you that said Frenchie’s are the same, just smaller, I am sorry, but that is completely false information. Coming from nearly ten years of the pet industry can be a blessing, but also a curse. You have all the right, but all the wrong contacts for your impulsive broken heart.
Before Tanner and the goblins, I had fostered for another rescue, with Pitbull’s. It was very challenging and rewarding and heartbreaking. It is no secret bully breeds are my preference. Usually, I don’t talk openly about controversial subjects, as its not best practice for a business owner... I have been missing fostering for a while now, but with the goblins being little, it wasn’t the responsible thing to do.
I was sipping away at a very disgusting cup of coffee (I am trying to cut sugar out) when I received a message. I had spoken about fostering again when we were back home. It was a picture of the cutest little face and the explanation that she was a diaper baby for life. She has Spina bifida and she was scheduled to be put down. Diaper baby life is a big commitment. There are a lot of pros and cons to weigh out. And I did none of those things. I messaged Tanner more out of formality. The truth be told, that man knew exactly who he was marrying, so none of this came as a surprise.
English Bulldogs are our breed hands down. There is nothing like them. However, they are three times more likely than any other breed to have spina bifida. I was very much ignorant to it before. Knowing it existed, but not much more about it then that. What can I say, we are a jump both feet in type of family?
I explained fostering to Tanner that at six months she would get spayed and then they would start to look for a forever home, but that dogs with disabilities take longer to find homes for.
Now in our new house design, Tanner is trying to figure out the best place for a dog wash for a foster dog that hadn't even arrived yet. We may or may not have diaper suspenders in our Amazon cart waiting to see what size she is, buying washable pee pads and different watering dishes to be more comfortable for her.
The sad part is, dogs like Morana get put down every day just because it’s work. They are not any less loving or personable. I watched videos of her playing, having such a zest for life. You will get to see this little face on our feed because places like the English Bulldog Rescue of Ontario exists. Because someone believed in this little girl, people volunteered their own time to pick her up. This Rescue hands down has to date been an amazing experience of the support provided for their foster homes, the knowledge and care. It’s a breath of fresh air to see.
I’m not going to write this blog pretending to be an expert. I’m sure there will be updates along the way. If you’re looking for a new charity, I’m sure they would love to hear from you.
This little diaper bummed baby just wanted to interrupt your day with the introduction. She will be staying at the Pampered Aesthetics residence for a little while.
If this is something you’ve had experience with before, please feel free to reach out with any tips or tricks. I would love to hear them, or any product recommendations you swear by. Somehow she manages to wiggle her bum right out of the diapers. LOL It's a learning curve...for both of us!
If you are local to us, I just wanted to do a quick mention of K9 Fit. Ashley is a huge animal advocate. She does so much work for and with various rescues. She has helped us out immensely in the past, but she is an amazing resource for fostering, especially the little diaper bums.
They say it takes a village; I am so grateful to our village. For all the things we take on in life, that have you got this mentality. And never question our sanity.
